What is a 7-inch seamless gutter?

A 7-inch seamless gutter is a K-style aluminum gutter with a wider opening and a deeper trough than the common 6-inch size, formed from coil in one continuous piece at the house. PrimeFlow fabricates both sizes on site from .032 aluminum, so the run has no seams between corners. A thicker .036 aluminum is also available for projects that call for it. "7-inch" is not one universal shape. Profiles differ by maker in front height, back height and bottom width, so any capacity number must name the exact profile.

How much more water does a 7-inch gutter hold than a 6-inch?

Using one manufacturer's published reference profiles (Senox), the 7-inch profile holds about 27% more water standing in the trough than the matching 6-inch profile. That is static volume, not flow. How fast water leaves a gutter also depends on slope, run length, outlet size and the number of downspouts.

When is a 7-inch gutter the right call in Florida?

A 7-inch gutter earns its place where water concentrates. The common cases we assess: When a 6-inch system with well-placed downspouts handles the calculated water, we say so. Six-inch when six-inch is right; seven-inch when the roof earns it. See our 6-inch vs 7-inch gutter FAQ and the 5 vs 6 vs 7-inch size guide.

  • Large roof planes that drain to one long run.
  • Roof valleys that pour two roof planes into a short section of gutter (see [why gutters overflow at roof valleys](/insights/roof-valley-gutter-overflow-florida)).
  • Steep tile and metal roofs, where water moves fast and can shoot past a smaller gutter ([tile roof gutters](/orlando/services/tile-roof-gutters), [metal roof gutters](/insights/gutters-metal-roofs-central-florida)).
  • Short, intense summer storms, which matter more than annual rainfall.

How do you calculate how much water reaches a gutter?

Roof runoff demand in gallons per minute is roughly roof area (sq ft) x rainfall intensity (in/hr) x 0.0104 (the rational method, with a runoff coefficient of 1.0 for a roof). This is the water arriving, not what a gutter can carry. Use a design storm intensity, never annual rainfall. The table shows why roof area matters so much: doubling the area draining to one run doubles the water. That water is split among roof planes, valleys and downspouts, which is why we map every plane before choosing a size.

Demand, not capacity. Calculated with PrimeFlow's runoff tool (Q = 7.48052/720 x C x i x A, C = 1.0). 4.5 in/hr is the Florida Building Code Appendix B informative one-hour, 100-year figure for Tampa; 6 and 8 in/hr are illustrations. Site-specific values come from NOAA Atlas 14 (hdsc.nws.noaa.gov/pfds) and the authority having jurisdiction.

Does Florida code require 7-inch gutters?

No. As of October 2026 the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023) is in force, and the 9th Edition (2026) takes effect December 31, 2026. Storm drainage is sized from design rainfall and drainage area (Florida Building Code, Plumbing, Chapter 11). There is no statewide 7-inch requirement. Your city or county may have local rules, so permits are checked with the local building department.

Why do downspouts make or break a 7-inch system?

A bigger gutter with a small outlet is still a small drainage system. If the outlet or downspout is the tightest point, a wider gutter just backs up sooner at the outlet. That is why PrimeFlow installs oversized downspouts and sizes them with the gutter. Read 3x4 vs 4x5 downspouts for 7-inch gutters and see our 4x5 downspout service in Orlando.

How should a 7-inch gutter be attached?

Water is heavy, and a 7-inch trough holds more of it. PrimeFlow uses hidden hangers about every 16 inches as company policy. That is tighter than our supplier Spectra's published maximum spacing, and it is our standard, not a code requirement. Hangers fasten into sound structure, never just a thin trim wrap. If a manufacturer or engineer requires something stricter on a job, that governs. More in our hanger spacing guide.
