Why is the downspout the bottleneck in a gutter system?
Water can only leave a gutter as fast as its tightest point allows. A gutter system is one chain: roof, gutter, outlet, downspout, elbows, then where the water lands. Put a wide 7-inch gutter on a small outlet and it simply backs up at the outlet. A bigger gutter with a small outlet is still a small drainage system.
What is the difference between 2x3, 3x4 and 4x5 downspouts?
The names give the outside size of a rectangular downspout in inches. Opening area is simple math, not a flow rating.
| Downspout | Nominal opening area | Typical role | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x3 rectangular | 6 sq in | small sections, tight spots | sensitive to debris and outlet size |
| 3x4 rectangular | 12 sq in | common premium pairing with 6-inch gutters | confirm outlet fit and the roof water it serves |
| 4x5 rectangular | 20 sq in | higher-flow homes, 7-inch systems, light commercial | more visible; outlet must match |
| 3-inch round | 7.07 sq in | architectural look | area is not capacity |
| 4-inch round | 12.57 sq in | architectural, higher volume | matching outlets and straps |
What does the Florida code table say about downspout capacity?
The Florida Building Code, Plumbing, 8th Edition (2023), Table 1106.3, lists a 4x5 rectangular vertical leader at 360 gallons per minute. It does not list a nominal 3x4. That rating applies to a straight vertical leader only, not to elbows, outlets, underground pipe or the whole system. Your building department decides what applies to your project.
How many gallons per minute does my roof send to each downspout?
Roof runoff demand is about 0.0104 x rainfall intensity (in/hr) x roof area (sq ft). At 6 in/hr, 1,000 sq ft of roof sends about 62.3 gpm and 2,000 sq ft about 124.7 gpm. We divide the roof among downspouts and check each outlet against its share. Full table in our 7-inch gutter guide.
When should a 7-inch gutter get 4x5 downspouts?
We consider 4x5 downspouts when: Sometimes two 3x4 downspouts fit the house better than one 4x5. The answer comes from the calculation and the layout. See 3x4 vs 4x5 downspouts.
- one downspout serves a large roof area or a valley ([valley overflow guide](/insights/roof-valley-gutter-overflow-florida));
- adding more downspouts isn't practical because of doors, walkways, pool decks or the look of the house;
- the existing outlet or downspout is backing up in heavy rain.
Why do outlets and elbows matter as much as the downspout?
A 4x5 pipe gains nothing behind a restrictive outlet. We match the outlet opening to the downspout, keep sealant out of the flow path, and use as few elbows as the route allows. Crushed elbows, screens and long offsets around deep eaves are common places for water to back up.
How far apart should downspouts be?
There is no one spacing that fits every roof. Our supplier's installation guide says both "every 40 feet" and "one downspout per gutter per 20-foot run," and neither is a water calculation. The SMACNA sizing method treats about 50 feet as a practical maximum gutter length per downspout because of thermal expansion. We place downspouts by roof water, not a fixed interval.
Where should the water go after the downspout?
Away from the wall, onto ground that slopes away, to an approved spot. Options include extensions, flip-up extensions and buried pipe to a legal discharge point. A downspout that dumps beside the slab or on a walkway moves the problem rather than solving it. See where downspouts should go and downspout drainage placement.
