Short answer. A gutter guard lets some roof water into the trough and keeps some debris out. It does not add outlet capacity, and it does not stop water that shoots past the front lip at a valley. Florida downpours are a reason to review the gutter and the downspout together. This page does not publish a rainfall rate.

01 / FIELD NOTE

A cover does not make the gutter larger.

Water still has to enter the trough, reach an outlet, and leave through a downspout. If the opening, the pitch, or the downspout is the limit, a guard does not raise that limit. The Central Florida guards guide is the longer page on debris. This page is the rain question. Florida Building Code, Residential, section R903.4 says that unless roofs are sloped to drain over roof edges, roof drains shall be installed at each low point of the roof. That sentence does not name a guard.

Afternoon storms are a pattern, not a test of one cover.

NWS Melbourne describes east-central Florida’s warm-season pattern of afternoon storms tied to the sea breeze. NWS Tampa Bay’s rainy-season note covers West Central and Southwest Florida, including a Southwest Florida window and a later window for the rest of that region. Those are office climatology pages. They are not a rainfall intensity for a roof in Orlando or Sarasota, and they do not score gutter guards. SMACNA’s calculator asks for intensity, roof area, gutter length, and downspout count together. This page does not publish a calculator result.

  • Orlando and east-central roofs: the Melbourne note is the pattern.
  • Sarasota and the Gulf coast: the Tampa Bay note is the pattern.
  • Neither note is a design rainfall.
  • The property review uses the roof in front of the crew.
03 / FIELD NOTE

Valleys can throw water past a cover.

On a steep roof, a valley can send a sheet past the front lip, especially when the cover changes how water enters. A guard that sheds leaves can also shed that sheet if the entry is wrong for the valley. The check is to watch the valley in rain when it is safe to do so from the ground, or to trace the stain line on the ground and the fascia. Overflow at a valley is a gutter and outlet question first.

What to look at before adding a second product

Pitch toward the outlet, an open downspout, and a lip the valley can actually reach. A second cover on top of a cover that already sheds water is not the fix.

Orlando and Sarasota guards are separate requests.

Use the Orlando guard page for an Orlando house and the Sarasota guard page for a Sarasota house. The debris and the storm office are not the same. Call (407) 902-7639 in Orlando or (941) 404-3901 in Sarasota.

05 / FIELD NOTE

The code section on roof drainage is not a guard requirement.

R903.4, read on the UpCodes copy of the 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, is about drains at low points when the roof does not drain over the edges. It does not require mesh, a screen, or a surface cover. A guard remains a product choice. The estimate is free and does not book the job. Work follows a written scope and the required deposit, unless a written waiver says otherwise.
