Start with how the outdoor area is actually used.
Doors, garage entries, covered patios, lanais, walkways, and seating areas can make splash, overshoot, or a poor discharge route more disruptive. Begin with the roof plane above the area, nearby valleys, the edge where water leaves the roof, and the path people need to use. The goal is a clearer roof-water route, not a promise to control all rain on the property.
Trace the complete route to ground level.
A gutter, outlet, downspout, elbows, brackets, and discharge point work together. A clean roofline alone is not enough if the water exits toward a door, walk, pool deck, or low area. UF/IFAS recommends directing gutters and downspouts toward suitable landscaped or pervious areas; whether that is practical must be confirmed for the individual site.
Plan around screens, pavers, equipment, and access.
Pool cages, screen walls, pavers, landscaping, gates, utility equipment, windows, doors, and existing drainage can all affect outlet and downspout placement. Structural screen work, broad grading, underground systems, or municipal drainage remain separate unless specifically included and qualified.
Match collection and vertical capacity to the roof demand.
Large covered areas or valleys can concentrate more roof runoff at one edge. Six-inch seamless gutters are a premium starting point for many homes, while qualifying 7-inch profiles and 4×5 downspouts may be evaluated for greater demand. The final choice still depends on outlets, wall routing, discharge, fascia, access, and the property-specific written scope.
Write the high-use-area choices into the proposal.
The written scope should identify the roof edge, gutter profile, outlet position, downspout location, attachment approach, discharge direction, access assumptions, and any trade or community coordination. That lets the homeowner compare actual routes instead of accepting a generic promise that one product will solve every outdoor water concern.
